How to Get Text Message Records From Google Fi

Short answer

Google Fi keeps a call and text history you can view and download as a .csv file, but only on the Google Fi website, not in the app. It shows the most recent 6 months, it holds no message content or call audio, and you can see only your own line's history, even if you manage a group plan. The words themselves are on the phones: export the conversation from your phone, and download the Fi history now if the dates matter, before they fall outside the 6 months.

A carrier log answers "when, and how often?". Only the conversation itself answers "what was said?".

What Google Fi's history shows

  • Every call and text made and received on your line, across your Fi devices.
  • The most recent 6 months only, at any time.
  • No message content and no call audio: Google says neither is stored or shown in this history.
  • Your own line only: a group owner can't see other members' history.

How to download it

  1. Open the Google Fi website (not the app) and sign in.
  2. Go to Settings, then History.
  3. Click Download, choose the time range, and download the .csv file.

Do it soon, and again later: older entries drop out after 6 months.

Where the words are

The conversation itself is on the phones. Export it as a file (see exporting Google Messages or exporting iPhone messages), then put the Fi log beside it: the log shows a message was sent at a time, the export shows what it said. For records held by other carriers, see how long phone carriers keep text messages and prepaid carrier records.

Matching the log to the messages

Verity reads your exported conversation in your browser, without uploading it, and numbers every message in date order, so a line in the Fi log can be matched to a numbered message.

The words are on the phone

Drop in your export and read every message numbered in date order. It is read in your browser and is not uploaded.
