Instagram Download Your Information: Find One Conversation

An Instagram download does not give you one conversation. It gives you every direct message conversation on the account, each in its own folder, inside a zip that may also hold your posts, reels and ad settings. This is a map of what is in there, drawn from two real downloads made in October 2026, one in each format Instagram offers.
How to find one conversation
1.Unzip the download
The file is named instagram, then your username, the date and a short code, ending in .zip. Unzip it anywhere.
2.Open the messages folder
Open your_instagram_activity, then messages, then inbox. Every conversation on the account has a folder there.
3.Find the person’s folder
Each folder is named after the other account in lower case, followed by an underscore and a long number. Sort by name and look for theirs.
4.Take the message file
The conversation is message_1.json, or message_1.html if you chose HTML when you made the export. A long conversation continues in message_2 and so on. A photos folder beside it holds pictures sent in the chat and is not needed to read the text.

Check the date range before you rely on it
One of the downloads we made covered exactly one year. Its own first page said so: it contained data from October 8, 2025 to October 8, 2026. Nothing older was in it. If the conversation you need goes back further, make the export again and set the date range to all time. Each HTML message page states the range it covers near the top, so you can check what you have.
JSON or HTML
Instagram asks which format you want. Both hold the same messages.
- HTML opens in a web browser. Each message shows the sender, the text, and a time such as Oct 07, 2026 8:59 pm. It is the easier one to read yourself.
- JSON is made for programs. Each message has the sender’s name, the text, and a time recorded to the thousandth of a second. In the one we read, messages were listed newest first.
The HTML times are printed to the minute, without seconds. If the exact order of messages sent close together matters, JSON keeps more.
Things that look wrong but are not
- A message can appear as a sender and a time with nothing in between. In the download we read, that was a message made of a button, not words. Pictures and shared posts can look the same in the text.
- A conversation can hold a line you never saw as a message, such as a note that an account messaged you because you followed it. Instagram stores those notes alongside the real messages.
- Folder names are squeezed: lower case, with spaces and punctuation taken out. An account with underscores in its name had none in its folder name. If you cannot find someone, open a few message files and read the title at the top.
- A group chat is a folder like any other. Its message file lists every participant.
Why one download is tiny and another is not
A download of messages only, in JSON, with five conversations came to less than half a megabyte. A download of a whole account in HTML came to more than 10 MB even though it held only two conversations: the rest was posts, reels, ad settings and login records. If you only need the messages, tick only Messages when you create the export.
Instagram keeps a finished download available for four days. After that you have to request it again.
Skipping the folder hunt
Verity reads the zip without unzipping it. Drop the whole download on the upload box and it lists every conversation by name, longest first, with a search box. Pick one and only that conversation is read. It works with either format. The zip is opened in your browser and is not uploaded.
