How to Export Discord Messages for Court Evidence
Discord conversations show up in family law cases more often than people expect — co-parents, partners, and family members all use it for ordinary conversation, not just gaming. There's no single "export this chat" button inside a server or DM, but there is a real way to get a complete, timestamped record straight from Discord itself.
What you're actually going after
Discord lets any account request a full copy of its own data, which includes message history. That request produces a data package — not a live export button inside a conversation, but a file Discord generates and emails you a link to once it's ready.
Getting the file
1.Request your data from Discord
On desktop: click the cogwheel in the bottom-left to open User Settings, select the Data & Privacy tab, scroll to "Request your data," and press Request Data. On mobile: tap your avatar in the bottom-right, tap the cogwheel in the upper-right, then Data & Privacy, and tap "Request all of my data." Confirm the request — Discord verifies the account has a confirmed email address first. Menus like this move around over time, so if the exact wording looks different, look for "Data & Privacy" under Settings.
2.Wait for the email — and plan for it
Discord's own support documentation says this can take up to 30 days to generate, though it's often considerably faster in practice. Either way, this isn't instant, which matters if you're gathering evidence against a filing deadline — request it as early as possible rather than waiting until you need it. Discord emails a download link to the address on the account once the package is ready, and that link stays active for 30 days.
3.What comes back
A data package containing your account's message history in JSON format, organized by server and channel, alongside other account data. 4.Upload the file as-is
Don't retype messages out of the JSON or convert it to another format first — upload the exported file exactly as you received it. A real Discord export carries the actual timestamp Discord's own servers recorded for each message, in full conversation order, with no manual step in between where content could be edited.
