How to Export Text Messages as Evidence
A conversation only holds up as evidence if the export is complete and unedited. Screenshots get contested — a full native export is much harder to argue with. Here's the correct export method for every major platform, plus what actually matters for keeping it credible.
Why screenshots are the weaker option
A screenshot is trivially easy to crop, reorder, or fabricate — and easy for the other side to claim was edited, even when it wasn't. A native export pulled directly from the app preserves the full thread in its original order with real timestamps, which is a fundamentally stronger starting point whether the export ends up supporting an attorney's filing or just helping you see a pattern clearly yourself.
Export instructions by platform
These are the same steps Verity walks you through during upload — reproduced here so you can prepare the file in advance.
Open the chat → tap the three dots (⋮) → More → Export chat → choose "Without Media". You'll get a plain .txt file with every message and timestamp intact.
iPhone iMessage / SMS
Apple doesn't offer a built-in "export chat" button. The reliable path is an unencrypted backup of the phone to a computer, then pulling chat.db out of it (iMazing's Messages → Export database works well, or on a Mac you can copy it directly from ~/Library/Messages/chat.db). That file contains the real message history, including deleted-looking bubbles some other methods miss.
Android SMS
Install "SMS Backup & Restore" from the Play Store → run a backup → it produces an XML file with the full thread.
Facebook Messenger
Facebook Settings → Your Facebook Information → Download Your Information → select Messages → Format: JSON → Create File. Facebook can take a few hours to prepare this.
Instagram DMs
Settings → Your Activity → Download Your Information → Messages → Format: JSON → Request Download.
Telegram (Desktop)
Open the chat → click the three dots (⋮) → Export Chat History → Format: JSON.
Snapchat
Settings → My Data → submit a data request → Snapchat emails you a download link for chat_history.json once it's ready.
OurFamilyWizard
Messages → filter the date range you need → Download PDF. OFW's export is a PDF, not a text file — that's normal, and it can be read directly without converting it first.
Keeping the export intact
- Export the full date range, not just the portion you think matters — context before and after a flagged message often matters as much as the message itself.
- Don't retype, summarize, or manually copy-paste messages into a new document — that breaks the chain back to the original file.
- Keep a copy of the raw export exactly as downloaded, separate from any redacted or annotated version you create afterward.
- If the case may end up in court, ask the attorney handling it whether they want the original device preserved as well, not just the export.
