How to Export Signal Messages for Court Evidence
Signal shows up in family law cases precisely because people choose it for its privacy — which is the same reason it's genuinely one of the harder platforms to produce clean evidence from. There is no “Export Chat” button like Telegram, and Signal's own official data-export tool doesn't contain your messages at all. Here's what that tool actually gives you, and what your real options are.
The official export doesn't include your messages — and that's by design
Signal has a real, built-in feature called “Your account data” (Settings → Account → Your Account Data → Export as JSON or TXT). It's easy to assume this is a chat export, but it isn't: it reports account-level information like your registered devices, groups you belong to, and safety-number details — not message content. Signal is end-to-end encrypted and doesn't store your messages on its servers once they're delivered, so there's nothing server-side for an account-data request to hand back. This isn't a bug or an oversight — it's the direct consequence of the architecture that makes Signal private in the first place.
What's actually possible
1.Signal Desktop's print-to-PDF
If Signal Desktop is linked to your phone and synced, you can open the conversation, scroll to load the full range of messages you need, and use your browser or OS's Print → “Save as PDF” function on the conversation view. This works, but it's manual, it captures a visual rendering rather than structured data, and long threads can be tedious to scroll through completely before printing.
2.Signal's newer “Secure Backups” feature
Signal has introduced an optional, encrypted backup feature (a free tier covering text messages plus roughly the last 45 days of media, and a paid tier for full media backup). This is built for restoring your account on a new device, not for producing a readable file — it's encrypted with a recovery key only you hold, and there's no built-in way to open it as a document. It's worth knowing this exists, but it isn't a practical path to evidence for most people.
3.Third-party and forensic extraction tools
Open-source tools exist that read Signal Desktop's local, encrypted database directly and convert it to Markdown, HTML, or CSV. These can work, but they require technical setup, access to the database encryption key stored on your machine, and — because they touch a local data file rather than an app-provided export — raise more questions about how the file was produced if it ever needs to be authenticated. If your case genuinely depends on Signal history and the built-in options above aren't enough, this is the point to loop in an attorney, or a forensic examiner, rather than run a tool you found online and hope it holds up.
Why this matters beyond just getting a file
Signal also supports disappearing messages and, for some threads, aggressive auto-delete timers — which means the harder problem often isn't exporting what exists, it's that relevant messages may already be gone by the time you think to look. If a case is reasonably anticipated, deleting or letting auto-delete timers run on relevant Signal threads can raise the same spoliation concerns as deleting texts on any other platform. If you do end up with a usable file
If a print-to-PDF, a manual transcript, or an extraction tool leaves you with structured data you can reformat into rows — sender, timestamp, and message text — Verity's generic CSV reader can work with it the same way it handles carrier records and other spreadsheet-format evidence.
