How to Export WeChat Messages for Court Evidence
WeChat comes up often in family law cases involving a Chinese-speaking parent, family member, or community — and it's honestly one of the hardest platforms on this list to get a clean, readable export from. There's no equivalent of Telegram's or Snapchat's official data-export tool. Here's what WeChat actually offers, and why it falls short of a real export.
Why there's no clean export
WeChat's own support documentation states plainly that chat history can't be exported directly because it isn't stored on WeChat's servers. WeChat's official data-export request (through its account and privacy tools) covers things like your Moments posts, favorites, and account information — not the content of your private or group conversations. If you're looking for something like Snapchat's “My Data” download that hands back a JSON file of your messages, WeChat doesn't have one.
What WeChat actually offers
Backup to PC (WeChat desktop client)
In the WeChat desktop app, the menu offers “Backup and Restore” → “Back up on PC,” which syncs chat history from your phone to your computer. This is a real, official feature — but it stores the data in WeChat's own local file format for use inside the app, not as a plain-text or spreadsheet file you can open and read directly.
Chat Log Migration (device to device)
WeChat also supports migrating chat history directly from one phone to another by scanning a QR code. This moves your history to a new device logged into the same account — it doesn't produce a file you can view, save, or hand to anyone else.
The realistic path, and its limits
Neither official option above hands you a readable conversation the way an app like Telegram or WhatsApp does. In practice, people trying to preserve WeChat evidence generally fall back to one of two things: manually transcribing or screenshotting the relevant messages (weaker evidence, and worth reading our guide on why screenshots alone aren't enough before relying on that alone), or using a third-party extraction tool that reads WeChat's local backup files and converts them to something like HTML, CSV, or PDF. Those tools vary widely in quality and legitimacy — if a case genuinely turns on WeChat history, this is a good point to involve an attorney or a forensic examiner rather than pick a tool at random.
