How Long Does WeChat Keep Messages?

Short answer

On your phone, for as long as you keep the app and the phone has space. WeChat's help center says chat history is stored within the app on your device, and that deleting the app deletes all of it. It also doesn't move to a new phone by itself; you have to migrate it. Messages sent to someone who isn't logged in wait up to 3 days. So the copy that matters is the one on the phone: don't delete the app or switch phones before you have saved what you need.

With no server copy to fall back on, one deleted app can be the end of the record.

What WeChat's own pages say

  • Chat history, including voice messages, images and video, is saved on your device within the app.
  • It can be kept indefinitely as long as the app isn't removed and the phone has enough storage.
  • Deleting the app deletes all of the chat history with it.
  • History doesn't transfer to a new device automatically; WeChat's Migrate Chats feature moves it.
  • Unread messages are kept for up to 3 days after sending if the recipient isn't logged in.

Keeping a copy

WeChat has no export that produces a readable copy of a conversation. The practical options, and their limits, are in getting WeChat messages ready for court; for long threads, see screenshotting a long conversation. Before a new phone, migrate the chats first and check they arrived (see switching phones during a case).

Can Verity read WeChat?

Not directly: there is no standard WeChat export file to read. If you have the messages in a spreadsheet, one row per message with the sender, the time and the text, Verity's CSV reader can number them in date order in your browser, without uploading them (see the CSV guide). Other apps are compared in how long apps keep messages.

Messages in a spreadsheet already?

Drop in a CSV and read every message numbered in date order. It is read in your browser and is not uploaded.
