How Long Does Google Chat Keep Messages?

Short answer

It depends on the history setting. Google's help page says each conversation can be saved, or set so messages are deleted after 24 hours, and a note appears in the chat whenever someone turns history on or off. On a personal account you choose; on a work or school account the organization decides. A personal account can download its Chat data, including messages and attachments, so if a conversation matters, check that history is on and download a copy.

A chat with history off keeps nothing for long. A note in the chat shows when that changed.

What Google's own pages say

In a conversation you can keep history, or have messages deleted automatically after 24 hours.
When anyone turns history on or off, a note says so in the conversation and the compose box shows the setting.
With a personal account you choose; with a work or school account your organization decides.
A personal account can download its Chat data: profile, memberships, and messages with attachments from direct messages, group messages and spaces. Group messages and spaces created by work or school users aren't included.

Keeping a copy

Check the setting at the top of the conversation; if history is off, new messages won't last.
The note that says history was turned off is itself worth a screenshot, with its date.
Download your Chat data and keep the file unchanged; screenshot the key messages too.

Can Verity read it?
