Short answer

TikTok doesn't publish a fixed time: its privacy policy says it keeps your messages as long as it needs them to run the service and for legal reasons. You can get your own copy through Download your data, which can take a few days and stays available for only 4 days. TikTok answers only law enforcement for user data, so save the chat yourself now, with screenshots and a data download.

Harassment and co-parenting arguments happen in TikTok messages too. Here is what TikTok says about keeping messages, what deleting does, and the two ways to keep your own copy.

How long does TikTok keep messages?

On TikTok’s servers

TikTok’s US privacy policy says it collects the messages you write, send and receive, and details such as when a message was sent and by whom. It keeps information as long as it needs it to run the service, to meet legal obligations and for legal claims, and it names no fixed period for messages.

In your own data download

You can ask TikTok for a copy of your data and choose what goes in it. TikTok says the file can take a few days to prepare and stays available to download for up to 4 days. Some data may be left out, such as data that affects other people’s privacy, and the last 24 to 48 hours of some categories may be missing.

On your phone

The conversation stays in your inbox until it is deleted. Screenshots you take are yours to keep, whatever happens to the account later.

Can TikTok messages be deleted?

TikTok's help pages say you can delete a voice message within 3 minutes of sending it. They don't describe deleting a written message for both people. Either way, the safe assumption is that a message can vanish from your screen, so the copy that counts is the one you save.

Deleting your own side once a case is likely can be treated as destroying evidence; see deleting texts during a custody case.

How do you save TikTok messages for court?

1.Screenshot the conversation now

Scroll through the chat in order and take screenshots that show the other account’s name and the dates. Don’t crop them. A message or a whole account can disappear before anything else arrives.

2.Request your data, with direct messages

In TikTok: Profile, the menu ☰, Settings and privacy, Account, Download your data. Choose what to include (make sure direct messages are part of it), pick a file format and tap Request data.

3.Download it within 4 days

TikTok notifies you in the app when the file is ready. Go back to Download your data, open the Download data tab and save the file somewhere safe. It is only available for up to 4 days.

4.Keep the account and the phone

Don’t delete your account, the app or the conversation while a case is likely. Your own copy is the record you control.

5.Tell your lawyer what the other account sent

Write down the other account’s username and the dates of anything that may have been deleted. Your lawyer can decide whether to ask the other side to preserve their messages.

Can a lawyer get TikTok messages from TikTok?

TikTok's law enforcement guidelines say it will not respond to requests for user data from anyone who isn't law enforcement, and that message content generally requires a court order, warrant or equivalent. Law enforcement can ask TikTok to preserve data for 90 days. Requests about users in the United States follow a separate US version of those guidelines. In a custody or divorce case, the messages come from the people in the chat; see how discovery of the other parent's messages works.

Can Verity read TikTok messages?

From screenshots, yes. Verity reads chat screenshots in your browser without uploading them, lets you check and correct every message, then numbers them in date order and flags patterns such as threats and harassment. Times read from screenshots are marked as approximate. It doesn't read TikTok's data download yet.
