How Long Does Telegram Keep Messages — and Can Deleted Telegram Messages Be Recovered for Court?
Reviewed by Jacob Reed, founder of Verity ·

Short answer
Telegram keeps ordinary chats in its cloud until they are deleted, but in a one-on-one chat either person can delete any message, or the whole history, for both sides, and nothing shows it was there. Secret chats are never in the cloud. An account inactive for 18 months is deleted. Export the chat from Telegram Desktop now.
Telegram is the easiest app to lose a conversation on: the other person can erase your copy too, and the chat doesn't say anything was removed. Here is how long each kind of chat lasts, what deleting does, and how to keep a copy no one else can change.
How long does Telegram keep messages?
Cloud chats (ordinary chats and groups)
Stored on Telegram’s servers so they can be opened on any device, until someone deletes them. Telegram’s privacy policy says it does this so people don’t need other backups.
Secret chats
Not stored on Telegram’s servers. They exist only on the two devices where the chat was started, can’t be forwarded, and are lost from a device that logs out. Messages can be set to self-destruct on a timer.
Auto-delete timer
Any chat can be set to delete messages a day, a week or a month after they are sent, or after a custom time. It applies only to messages sent after the timer is set. A global setting (Settings > Privacy & Security > Auto-Delete Messages) can turn it on for new chats.
Inactive accounts
An account that doesn’t come online for 18 months (the default; it can be changed in Settings) is deleted along with all its messages, media and contacts in Telegram’s cloud.
What happens when a Telegram message is deleted?
Deleting in a one-on-one chat
Telegram’s privacy policy says either person can delete any message in a one-on-one chat, sent or received, for both sides. Either person can also clear the whole chat history for both, whatever the other has kept.
No “deleted” marker
Telegram’s FAQ says deleted messages don’t leave a mark in the chat. Unlike WhatsApp or Messenger, nothing shows that a message was ever there.
Deleting in groups
The privacy policy promises at least 48 hours to delete a message for everyone. In large groups, deleted messages and the original versions of edited ones are kept for 48 hours for the admins’ Recent Actions log.
Secret chats
Deleting a message on one side tells the other device to delete it too.
Can deleted Telegram messages be recovered?
Not from Telegram. A message deleted for both sides is removed from the cloud copy everyone sees, and Telegram keeps deleted messages only in large groups, for 48 hours, for the admins. Telegram also turns off the phone's ordinary system backups, so there is usually no phone backup to fall back on. Where a deleted message can still exist:
- An export made before the deletion, by you or anyone else in the chat. A result.json file doesn't change when the chat does.
- The other person's device, if the message was deleted only on your side. Your lawyer can ask them to preserve it (how discovery works).
- Screenshots, notification previews and forwards made before the message was removed.
Clearing a chat yourself, or turning on auto-delete once a case is likely, can be treated as destroying evidence; see deleting texts during a custody case and auto-deleting apps and spoliation.
How do you save a Telegram chat for court?
1.Export the chat today
Install Telegram Desktop on a computer and sign in. Open the chat, click the three dots at the top right, choose Export chat history, pick Machine-readable JSON, and set the dates to cover the whole conversation. Telegram writes a folder with a result.json file. Keep it in two places.
2.Move fast
In a one-on-one chat, the other person can erase the whole history for both of you at any time. An export made today is the only copy that a later deletion can’t touch.
3.Check the auto-delete timer
Open the chat’s settings and see whether auto-delete is on. If it is, export now: messages already sent will go when their time is up.
4.Photograph secret chats
Secret chats live only on the phone where they were started, so the Telegram Desktop export can’t include them. If one matters, photograph the screen with another device, with the date showing, and don’t log out of that phone.
5.Keep a dated log and talk to your lawyer
Write down what deleted messages said, and when they disappeared. Ask your lawyer about asking the other side not to delete anything.
The export works only in Telegram Desktop, not the phone apps. Full steps, and what the file looks like, are in exporting Telegram messages for court and how to read a Telegram result.json file.
Can a lawyer get Telegram messages from Telegram?
Not in a family case. Telegram's privacy policy says that if it receives a valid order from judicial authorities confirming someone is a suspect in a criminal case, it may disclose that person's IP address and phone number. It describes no process for handing over message content, and says secret chats leave it no data to disclose. It also stores cloud chats across data centers in several countries. In a custody or divorce case, the messages come from the devices and exports of the people in the chat.
Can Verity read a Telegram export?
Yes. Drop in the result.json file from Telegram Desktop and Verity reads it in your browser without uploading it. It shows every message numbered in date order and flags patterns such as threats, gaslighting and message flooding. You can also read the whole conversation on screen for free.
Common questions
Can the other person delete my Telegram messages from my phone?
Yes, in a one-on-one cloud chat. Telegram lets either person delete any message, sent or received, for both sides, or clear the whole history for both. That is why an export made early matters more on Telegram than on most apps.
Does Telegram show that a message was deleted?
No. Telegram’s FAQ says deleted messages don’t leave a mark in the chat. Keep your own notes of what was there and when it went.
Does the Telegram export include deleted messages or secret chats?
No. The export is the chat as it is in Telegram’s cloud on the day you make it. Deleted messages are gone from it, and secret chats are never in the cloud.
Can a lawyer get Telegram messages from Telegram?
Telegram’s privacy policy describes disclosing only an IP address and phone number, and only on a valid order from judicial authorities about a criminal suspect. It says it has no data to give for secret chats. In a custody or divorce case, the messages come from the devices of the people in the chat.
Other apps work differently: see how long WhatsApp keeps messages, how long Snapchat keeps messages and how long Messenger keeps messages.
