How Long Does Facebook Messenger Keep Messages — and Can Deleted Messages Be Recovered for Court?

Short answer

Messenger keeps messages until someone deletes them, unless disappearing messages are on. A message deleted for everyone is gone for good: Meta says deletion is permanent, and Facebook's download only shows that something was deleted. Encrypted chats can't be read by Meta and need their own download. Download the chat now.

Messenger doesn't delete old messages on its own, so a years-long chat is usually still there. What changes the record is a person deleting, a disappearing-messages timer, or losing access to an encrypted chat. Here is what each one does, and where copies can still exist.

How long does Messenger keep messages?

Ordinary messages

They stay in the chat until someone deletes them. Meta is moving personal chats to end-to-end encryption, which means only the people in the chat can read them; Meta says it can’t. A chat that is encrypted says “End-to-end encrypted” in its settings.

Disappearing messages

In an end-to-end encrypted chat, anyone in the chat can set a timer so messages disappear after they have been seen. With the timer on, a message nobody reads within 14 days disappears too. Messenger says it tells the chat when it detects a screenshot or screen recording, but may not catch them all.

Edited messages

A message can be edited up to five times within 15 minutes of sending. The chat marks it as edited, and the other people can open its edit history.

Encrypted chats live in Messenger's message storage, which you unlock with a PIN or code when you sign in on a new device. Meta's help center says a PIN can be reset, but not what a reset does to older messages, so don't count on it: keep the PIN, and download the chat while you can still open it.

What happens when a Messenger message is deleted?

Delete for you

Removes the message from your screen only. The other people in the chat still see it. This is the only choice for a message you received.

Delete for everyone

Only for messages you sent. Nobody in the chat can see it afterwards. Meta’s help center gives no time limit for this, and warns that people may already have read the message.

What is left behind

If someone in the chat downloads their Facebook information, it shows that messages were deleted, but not what they said. A deleted message can still be reviewed by Meta if it is reported within 14 days, or within 6 hours in an end-to-end encrypted chat.

Deleting a forwarded message removes only that copy; the original stays wherever it was first sent. Archiving a chat hides it from your list without deleting anything.

Can deleted Messenger messages be recovered?

Not from Messenger. Meta's help center says deleting messages, chats or photos removes them permanently and you won't be able to see them anymore. Where a deleted message can still exist:

The other person's account, if it was deleted only on your side (delete for you, or deleting the whole chat). Your lawyer can ask them to preserve it (how discovery works).
A Facebook download made before the deletion, by you or anyone else in the chat. Keep every download you have already made.
Screenshots, notification previews and forwards made before the message was removed.

How do you save a Messenger chat for court?

1.Download the chat now

Ordinary chats come in Facebook’s Download Your Information file (search “download your information” in Facebook’s settings, and tick Messages). End-to-end encrypted chats are not in that file: they come from a separate download in Messenger on a computer (three dots next to Chats > Privacy & safety > End-to-end encrypted chats > Message storage > Download message storage data). Make both if you are unsure which kind of chat it is.

2.Keep your PIN or recovery code

Encrypted chats come back on a new phone or computer only with the PIN or code you set for message storage. Write it down somewhere safe before you change phones or log out.

3.Don’t delete anything yourself

Deletion in Messenger is permanent. Leave the chat as it is, and don’t archive-then-delete threads to tidy up. Archiving only hides a chat; deleting removes it.

4.Screenshot what a download won’t show well

Capture disappearing messages before their timer ends, edited messages with their edit history open, and anything the other person deleted that you read first, with the date showing.

5.Keep a dated log and ask about the other side’s copy

Write down what deleted messages said, and when. Then ask your lawyer about asking the other side to preserve and produce their copy of the chat.

Can a lawyer get Messenger messages from Meta?

Usually not. Meta's law enforcement guidelines say a search warrant, issued on probable cause, is required to compel the stored contents of an account, and they send private parties, including civil litigants, to the Facebook Help Center instead. For a chat protected by end-to-end encryption, Meta says it can no longer provide the message content at all, only records such as message logs. Meta will hold account records for 90 days at the request of a criminal investigation, but that is for police, not for a custody case. In family court, the messages come from the people in the chat and their downloads.

Can Verity read a Messenger download?

Common questions

If I delete a Messenger chat, does the other person still have it?

Yes. Deleting for you, or deleting a whole chat, only removes your copy. The other person keeps every message except those the sender deleted for everyone.

Does Facebook’s download include deleted messages?

No. Meta says the download shows that messages were deleted, but not what they said. Messages that disappeared on a timer aren’t in it either.

Why is my Messenger conversation missing from my Facebook download?

Most likely it is end-to-end encrypted. Those chats are left out of Download Your Information and come from a separate download in Messenger’s Privacy & safety settings.

Can a lawyer subpoena Meta for Messenger messages?
