How to Save a Whole iPhone Text Conversation Without a Computer
Reviewed by Jacob Reed, founder of Verity ·
Short answer
You can't export a whole conversation from the iPhone alone; a full export needs a computer. On the phone, the practical record is a set of overlapping screenshots with the name and times showing, saved as one PDF through Print → Save to Files, plus a screen recording of you scrolling through the thread.
Apple's Messages app has no export, print or “save conversation” button. If you don't have a computer, or can't get to one before the conversation needs saving, here is how to make the best record you can with only the phone, and when it is worth borrowing a computer for an hour.
What can you do with only the iPhone?
Screenshots are the record you can make on the phone itself. Done carefully, they show who the conversation is with, who sent each message, and when. Copying messages into Notes or forwarding them to yourself loses the times and who said what, so it isn't a good substitute.
How do you save the conversation step by step?
1.Start at the first message you need
Open the conversation in Messages and scroll up to the earliest message that matters. Keep the person's name or number visible at the top of the screen.
2.Show the times
Messages shows the date and time above each new batch of messages. To see the exact time of every message, touch the conversation and drag it to the left; the times appear along the right edge while you hold it.
3.Screenshot each screen as you scroll down
Press the side button and volume-up together (or the side or top button and Home on older iPhones). Scroll down so the next screenshot overlaps the last by a message or two, so nothing falls between them. The iPhone has no scrolling screenshot for Messages, so this is one screen at a time.
4.Check the order and keep them uncropped
In Photos, the screenshots sit together in the Screenshots album. Make sure they run from oldest to newest, delete duplicates, and don't crop out the name, dates or times.
5.Save them as one PDF
Select the screenshots, tap Share, then Print. In the print preview, tap the Share button (or spread two fingers on the preview page) and choose Save to Files. You now have one PDF to email to your attorney or print.
6.Make a screen recording as backup
Add Screen Recording to Control Center if it isn't there, start a recording, and scroll slowly through the whole conversation. It is not a document anyone will read page by page, but it shows the conversation in one continuous piece, straight from the phone.
Can screenshots be turned back into a conversation?
Yes. Verity reads chat screenshots in your browser: it finds each message bubble, works out which side sent it, reads the text, and joins overlapping screenshots without repeating messages. You review and correct every message before anything is analyzed, and the screenshots are not uploaded. Times come from the date headers in the screenshots, so they are marked as approximate, and screenshot uploads get the Standard report. Our guide to analyzing text message screenshots covers how to take them so they read well.
When is it worth borrowing a computer?
When the conversation runs to months, screenshots get slow, and the times are only as exact as what is on the screen. A full export captures every message with its exact date and time in one file. It needs a computer only once: a Mac with Messages signed in to the same Apple ID, or a Windows PC with a tool that reads an iPhone backup. A friend's computer or a library computer for an hour is enough. Our iMessage export guide walks through both.
Are the messages saved anywhere else?
If Messages in iCloud is turned on (Settings → your name → iCloud), the conversation is kept in sync across your Apple devices, and an iPad or Mac signed in to the same Apple ID shows the same thread. That is not an export, but it means a second device can be another place to screenshot from, and a conversation deleted on one device is usually deleted on all of them. See iCloud sync versus backup.
What should the saved copy show?
- the person's name or number at the top
- the dates, and the times where they matter
- which side each message is on
- the messages around the important ones, so nothing reads as cut out of context
Keep the phone and don't delete the conversation. If anyone questions the screenshots, the original thread is what they get checked against.
This is general information, not legal advice. Verity is not a law firm, and what a court accepts as a record of text messages varies. Ask your attorney or the court clerk what your case needs.
Have your screenshots?
Pick them all at once in the upload box and choose “Read my screenshots.” They are read on your device and are not uploaded.
