Is There an App That Analyzes iPhone Texts for Abuse or Manipulation?

Reviewed by Jacob Reed, founder of Verity ·

Short answer

Yes, but an iPhone can't export a conversation by itself. App Store red-flag apps such as Toxicity read a screenshot or pasted text. Dispute Buddy, a computer app, pulls the conversation off the phone and builds a report. Verity reads iPhone screenshots or the Messages database in your browser, without uploading them, and flags patterns across the whole conversation.

With an iPhone, the analysis is the easy part. The hard part is getting the conversation off the phone in one piece, with who sent each message and when. Which app fits depends on whether you can use a computer.

Step 1: get the conversation off the iPhone

Only the iPhone

Take overlapping screenshots of the conversation with the dates showing (step by step). Apps can read screenshots, but every time read from one is an estimate, and you only get the stretch you scrolled through.

A Mac

The Mac's Messages app keeps its messages in a database file called chat.db, with exact times; with Messages in iCloud turned on, that includes the iPhone's conversations (where it is and how to copy it, how to read it).

A Windows PC

Back up the iPhone to the PC with Apple's app, unencrypted, and copy one file out of the backup: the phone's message database, sms.db (step by step).

Some App Store analyzers ask you to upload an “iMessage export” without saying how to make one. On an iPhone, that means one of the routes above.

Step 2: pick the kind of app

1.Red-flag apps on the App Store

You screenshot a message or paste it in, and an AI names red flags and suggests a reply. Toxicity: Text & Tone Analyzer is one: its App Store listing says screenshots are read on the phone, the text is analyzed in the cloud and not stored, three messages a day are free, and Pro is $2.99 a month. Good for a second opinion on one exchange. They see only what you show them and keep no dated record of the conversation.

2.Paste-in checkers on the web

Tether, DARVO.app, Gaslighting Check and Verity's free text check name the tactics in a few messages you paste in. See apps that check texts for manipulation for where each one sends what you paste.

3.Tools that read the whole conversation

Dispute Buddy is a computer app: you connect the iPhone, choose the contacts and dates, and it builds the message history and a report that groups behaviors into themes with links to the texts, for a one-off fee, as its founder describes it. Verity reads the Messages database (chat.db or sms.db) or your screenshots in your browser, so the conversation is not uploaded, and flags patterns across all of it with every message dated. See Dispute Buddy vs. Verity.

What to check before you use one

  • Where the messages go. Read the privacy page. A conversation holds the other person's words too.
  • How much it reads. One message rarely shows a pattern. Blame-shifting, demands for replies or threats matter because of how often they happen.
  • Whether dates and senders survive. They matter if you ever need the messages for a lawyer or a court.
  • Who else can see your messages. If an ex may still be signed in to your Apple Account on another device, new messages can sync there; see iMessage access on an old device after separation.

What can't these apps do?

They read words and timing. They can flag a joke as an insult and miss cruelty that is politely worded, and none can say what anyone meant or whether a court will accept the result. Times read from screenshots are estimates, and photos, voice memos and calls are not analyzed. Our methodology page sets out what Verity measured and where it falls short.

Where does Verity fit?

Drop in the chat.db or sms.db file, or pick your screenshots, on a phone or a computer, with nothing to install. A database holds many conversations, so you pick the person first. The free preview shows the patterns found and one flagged message in full, and lets you read every message on screen, numbered in date order. Paid options are one-time: every message numbered in date order ($19), or a report quoting the flagged messages with their dates ($99 Standard, $149 Detailed). Screenshot uploads can get the numbered list or the Standard report.

Common questions

Can I export a whole iMessage conversation from my iPhone without a computer?

No. The iPhone has no export button for a conversation. Without a computer, the practical record is a set of overlapping screenshots with the dates showing; a full export with exact times needs a Mac or a Windows PC.

Do these apps upload my messages?

Many do: most AI red-flag apps and paste-in checkers send the text to a server, often on to an AI company. Read each app’s privacy page. Verity reads the conversation in your browser and does not upload it, which you can test by turning off the internet after the page loads.

Can an app find messages that were deleted from the iPhone?

Usually not. These apps read what is in the screenshots, the export or the database you give them. A deleted message may survive in an older backup or on another device signed in to the same Apple Account.
