How to Back Up Text Messages Online — and Which Backup You Can Actually Give Your Lawyer
Reviewed by Jacob Reed, founder of Verity ·

Short answer
On iPhone, Messages in iCloud keeps your texts online but syncs deletions too; with it off, iCloud Backup includes them. On Android, Google's backup includes SMS, MMS and Google Messages' RCS, but it is for restoring a phone. For a file you can open and hand to a lawyer, SMS Backup & Restore saves your texts as an XML file and can upload it to Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive on a schedule.
“Backed up online” can mean three different things: a sync that mirrors every change, a phone backup you can only restore, or a file you can open. If the messages might matter in a custody case or a harassment complaint, the difference decides whether you still have them, and whether you can show them to anyone.
What are the ways to back up texts online?
iPhone: Messages in iCloud
Stores your messages in iCloud and keeps every signed-in iPhone, iPad and Mac the same. Apple says that because the messages are in the cloud, sending, receiving or deleting one on any device shows up everywhere. Messages and their photos count toward your iCloud storage. It is a sync, not a backup: a conversation deleted on one device is gone from all of them.
iPhone: iCloud Backup
If Messages in iCloud is off, your iMessages, texts (SMS) and MMS are included in your daily iCloud Backup. If it is on, Apple says they sync to iCloud instead and are not in the backup. A backup is something you restore to a phone, not a file you can open.
Android: Google backup
Backs up your phone to your Google Account, including SMS and MMS messages, and RCS messages when you use Google Messages. Google gives 15 GB free, says a backup can take up to 24 hours, and describes restoring it to the same phone or another Android phone. It can’t be restored onto an older Android version.
Android: SMS Backup & Restore
A free app that saves your texts (and, if you choose, picture messages and RCS) as an XML file on the phone and can upload it to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or email, on a schedule you set. Its makers recommend Google’s Messages app if you want RCS messages backed up.
The iCloud difference trips up a lot of people after a breakup: see why deleted texts vanish from iCloud (sync vs. backup) and an old device still signed in after a separation.
How do you set it up?
1.iPhone: check which iCloud setting is on
Open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, then See All (or Show All), then Messages in iCloud. If it is on, your messages sync; if it is off, make sure iCloud Backup is on so they are backed up.
2.Android: turn on Google backup
Open Settings, tap Google, then All services, and under Backup and restore tap Backup. Turn it on, or tap Back up now.
3.Android: add a file backup you can open
Install SMS Backup & Restore, back up your messages, and choose Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive as the place to upload. Set a schedule, and run one backup yourself now so you know it works.
4.Keep a copy that sync can’t change
For anything that might go to court, also export the conversation itself and keep that file somewhere that doesn’t sync, so a deletion on the phone can’t reach it.
Which backup can you give your lawyer?
A sync or a phone backup protects you if the phone is lost, but neither gives you something to read or print. What a lawyer can use is the conversation as a file: every message with its date and sender. On Android that is the XML file SMS Backup & Restore makes (see how to open an SMS Backup & Restore file). On iPhone it is an export of the conversation (see exporting iMessages for court, or saving an iPhone conversation without a computer). Keep that file somewhere that doesn't sync, so a deletion on the phone can't reach it.
Can Verity read a backup file?
Yes. Verity reads an SMS Backup & Restore XML file, an iPhone message database (chat.db) and most app exports in your browser, without uploading them. A backup covers the whole phone, so it lets you pick the one conversation that matters, then numbers every message in date order and points out patterns such as threats or controlling messages.
Common questions
Is an online backup enough for court?
A backup protects you if the phone is lost, but most of these are for restoring a phone, not for reading or printing. For court you want the conversation as its own file, exported with every message, date and sender, kept somewhere that doesn’t sync.
If I delete a text, is it deleted from my iCloud too?
With Messages in iCloud on, yes: Apple says a deletion on one device shows up everywhere. An older iCloud Backup made while Messages in iCloud was off may still hold it until that backup is replaced.
Can I read my texts from Google’s backup?
Google’s page describes restoring the backup to a phone; it doesn’t offer the messages as a file to open. SMS Backup & Restore does: its XML file can be opened, and Verity reads it.
Does SMS Backup & Restore send my texts to its makers?
SyncTech’s privacy policy says the contents of your backups are never uploaded to any server of its own. Copies go to the phone and to the cloud account you choose to upload to.
If the texts are already gone, see whether deleted text messages can be recovered and what your phone carrier can give you.
