We Tried 6 Red-Flag Text Scanner Apps on the Same Chat

Short answer

None of the six Android apps we tried let us give it an exported conversation. The chat readers take a pasted snippet or screenshots, so there are no dates and no whole history, and several charge weekly, in tokens or with ads before you see a result. Only one, Toxicity, ran for free: it caught gaslighting and DARVO but not the threats. They suit a quick “is this text toxic?”; for a record a lawyer can use, keep the full export.

Search an app store for “red flag” or “toxic text” and you get a page of scanners promising to decode a message in seconds. We wanted to know what each actually does with your messages, so we gave them all the same conversation.

How we tested

On October 25, 2026 we installed each app on a Pixel 9 and used one fictional 51-message co-parenting chat between “Taylor” and “Alex”. Alex's side includes denial (“That never happened. You're imagining things again”), control (“You're not allowed to take her to your mom's”), two threats (“You'll regret this” and a line about making sure the judge hears what kind of parent Taylor is), blame reversal (“I'm the victim here”) and a shutdown at the end. We bought nothing, started no trials, made no accounts, accepted no terms, and opened nothing from the phone's own messages or photos.

Toxicity: Text & Tone Analyzer

VybeTech Labs LLC, version 1.4.1

How you give it messages
Paste up to 1,000 characters; screenshot scanning was Premium.
Price
Three messages a day free; Premium monthly, annual or lifetime.
What happened
Ran. Scored ten of Alex's lines 75% toxic and tagged gaslighting and DARVO with an accurate short summary. Did not mention the two threats, the control or the shutdown. Its listing says text is analyzed in the cloud and never stored. Toxicity vs. Verity

red-flag AI: Chat Analysis

Candee Labs, version 1.3

How you give it messages
Paste one message at a time or add a photo; an “Auto-upload” option asks to read the phone’s own texts.
Price
Tokens: $1.99 for 100 up to $24.99 for 2,000, or watch an ad.
What happened
Not run: it started with no tokens and the free-token ad did not load on two tries. Its listing offers attachment styles and personality traits as well as red flags. red-flag AI vs. Verity

Selka

UltraTech Apps, version 15.0

How you give it messages
Screenshots or a dating profile. Both paste options led to “Upload your screenshots”.
Price
Not reached.
What happened
Not run: it needed photos picked from the phone's gallery. A full-screen ad for a game showed each time it opened. Built for dating: its listing mentions voice notes and comparing partners.

RedFlag – Women Dating Advice

Pocket Implementation S.R.L., version 1.0.5

How you give it messages
Chat analysis from screenshots, plus tracking of dating events.
Price
$5.99 a week or $39.99 a year, asked for straight away.
What happened
Not run: nothing could be tried without subscribing.

GaslightGuard

TrendX, version 1.6.2

How you give it messages
Not a chat reader: an 18-question self-check and a journal.
Price
Not reached.
What happened
Not run: it asks you to tick “I have read the above and I agree” before going on. Its listing says everything stays on the phone, with no account and no server, which suits a private journal.

Vibe Check

Empathy Sphere, version 1.0.12

How you give it messages
Paste a message; its listing promises AI analysis and reply suggestions.
Price
Not reached.
What happened
Not run: it opens on terms and conditions to accept before anything else.

Verity on the same chat

We make Verity, so read this part with that in mind. Given the whole 51-message export with its dates, and using its wording and timing patterns without the on-device meaning model, Verity flagged gaslighting three times, coercive control three times, threats twice, DARVO, stonewalling, minimizing twice and deflection twice, and gave a health score of 43. It also counted three messages of appreciation and one of accountability, because a fair record shows the good with the bad. Verity Lite, the Android app, scored the same chat 40 the day before. The conversation was read in the browser and not uploaded.

What the test showed

  • A snippet loses the dates. Pasted text and screenshots carry no reliable timestamps, and a 1,000-character box holds about ten short messages. A court cares when each message was sent and how often things happened.
  • Check that threats are caught. The one app that ran named the gaslighting and DARVO but not the threats, which are what a protective order or custody hearing asks about first.
  • The price often shows up at the point of use. Weekly subscriptions, tokens and ads showed up only after install.
  • Ask where the words go. The other person's messages are being shared too. Toxicity says it analyzes text in the cloud and does not store it; read each app's privacy policy before pasting.
  • They are quick. For a single text that has you rattled, a screenshot-in, answer-out app is faster than exporting a whole chat. Verity's free text check does the same in your browser, with no account or daily limit.

For paste-in checkers on the web, such as DARVO.app, Tether and Gaslighting Check, see apps that check text messages for manipulation.

This is general information, not legal advice, and Verity is not a law firm. We make Verity. Each app's features and prices are as its Google Play listing and the app itself showed them on October 25, 2026, in the versions named above, and can change. One test with one fictional chat is not a benchmark.
