Why the Times on Your Exported Texts Look Wrong, and How to Check Them
Reviewed by Jacob Reed, founder of Verity ·

Short answer
Usually a time zone. Some exports store each message's moment in a form that is turned into local time when the file is opened, so the same file shows different times on a computer set to another zone. Others write the clock time the phone showed, with no zone at all. A phone that was switched off, a trip, or a daylight saving change can shift times too. Open the export on a computer set to the zone the phone was in, check a few messages you remember, and write down the zone you used.
A message that says it arrived at 3 AM, when you know it came at 9 PM, is the kind of detail the other side will question. It is worth getting right before anyone else reads it.
Two kinds of time in an export
- A moment, converted when shown. SMS Backup & Restore, for example, stores each message's time as a number of milliseconds (SyncTech's field list calls it a Java date). Whatever opens the file decides which time zone to show it in.
- The clock time, as written. A WhatsApp chat export starts each line with the date and time the phone showed. No time zone is written, so a reader can't tell from the file alone where the phone was.
Other reasons a time looks off
- Sent and received are different moments. SyncTech's list has a separate "date_sent" field and says it can differ from the received time, for example when a phone was off and got the message later.
- A trip: messages sent while the phone was in another zone.
- A daylight saving change, which moves an hour around twice a year.
- A phone whose clock was set by hand to the wrong time.
- Day and month swapped: 3/4 is March 4 in the US and 3 April elsewhere.
How to check yours
- Open the export on a computer set to the time zone the phone was in.
- Find three or four messages whose time you are sure of (a pickup, a school run, a call that followed).
- If they match, note the zone. If they are all off by the same number of hours, it is a zone difference.
- Write down any trips or periods when the phone was off, so a gap or a jump has an explanation.
What Verity's numbered list says about time
Verity reads your export in your browser, without uploading it, and numbers every message in date order. The list's cover states the time zone it used, with the words "this computer, not the original device", and each time carries that zone, so nobody has to guess. If the phone was in another zone, build the list on a computer set to that zone, or tell your lawyer which zone the list shows. The list also flags gaps of seven days or more, which is where a missing stretch tends to show.
