Why Is My Text Message Export Missing Messages?
Reviewed by Jacob Reed, founder of Verity ·

Short answer
Most gaps have an ordinary cause: the phone was set to keep messages for only 30 days or a year, the messages were in a group chat that is saved separately, photos and voice messages were left out, messages were deleted or set to disappear, the export was made on a computer, or the backup ran before the messages arrived. Find the cause before anyone asks about the gap, write it down, and check whether another device or the other person's copy still has what yours lost.
A gap you can explain is a detail. A gap nobody can explain is a question mark over the whole record.
The usual reasons
- A keep-messages setting. An iPhone can delete messages after 30 days or a year; see how long an iPhone keeps texts.
- Group chats. A group text is its own conversation, not part of the one-to-one thread. When Verity reads a Messages database or an SMS Backup & Restore file, it lists one-to-one conversations and says how many group-text messages were not included; see group chat messages as evidence.
- Photos, videos and voice messages. Many exports leave media out or keep only a placeholder line; see voice messages in chats.
- Deleted or unsent messages. See does an export include deleted messages?
- Disappearing and view-once messages. WhatsApp says view-once messages are not exported; other apps' timers are covered in how long apps keep messages.
- An export from a computer. WhatsApp says an export from WhatsApp on a computer doesn't include media; export from the phone instead.
- A backup taken too early. A backup holds what was on the phone when it ran. Run a fresh one before you export.
- Messages in iCloud. Whether old messages live on the phone, in iCloud or in a backup changes what an export sees; see iCloud sync vs backup.
- A new phone. A transfer can drop messages; see switching phones.
Where the missing messages may still be
- An iPad or Mac signed in to the same account; see your texts on an iPad or Mac.
- An older backup, on a computer or in iCloud or Google.
- The other person's phone, which your lawyer can ask for in discovery.
- The carrier, for the fact that messages were sent, though not the words; see how long carriers keep texts.
Seeing the gaps
Verity reads your export in your browser, without uploading it, and numbers every message in date order. The numbered list's cover lists every gap of seven days or more, so a missing stretch is visible rather than hidden. In WhatsApp exports and SMS Backup & Restore files it also shows photos and voice messages where they were sent, without a number, and in WhatsApp exports the "This message was deleted" lines too. Note next to each gap what you know about it.
