Does Exporting a Chat Include Deleted Messages? What Each App Keeps
Reviewed by Jacob Reed, founder of Verity ·

Short answer
Usually not. An export copies the conversation as it is on that phone the day you make it, so a message deleted before then is missing. Some apps leave a mark where it was: WhatsApp writes “This message was deleted” with the time, and Messenger and GroupMe downloads show that a message was deleted, but none of them keep its words. Instagram and Telegram leave no trace. Export early, and look for other copies.
If the other person deleted messages before you saved the chat, here is what your export will and won't show for each app, and where a deleted message may still exist.
What does each app's export show for a deleted message?
An export is the chat as it is on that phone the day you make it. A message deleted for everyone stays as a “This message was deleted” (or “You deleted this message”) line with its time, but its words are gone. Delete for everyone works for about two days after sending; after that, a deletion removes the message from the deleter’s phone only. Messages that disappeared on a timer aren’t in the export.
iPhone (iMessage and SMS)
An iPhone has no export button: a copy comes from a computer backup or the Mac’s Messages database, and either holds what was on the device when it was made. A message you deleted waits in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days and can be put back before you copy the phone. An iMessage can be unsent for 2 minutes; it disappears from the other phone and both conversations show a note that a message was unsent.
Facebook Messenger
Meta says your Facebook information download shows that messages were deleted, but not what they said. A message the sender removed for everyone is gone from both sides; the other person keeps every message the sender only removed for themselves. The separate download of end-to-end encrypted chats has a field that marks a message as unsent.
Instagram says the copy of your information you can download leaves out messages you deleted or unsent.
Telegram
In a one-on-one chat either person can delete any message for both sides, and Telegram’s FAQ says deleted messages leave no mark in the chat. An export made afterwards has no line where the message was.
Signal
Delete for everyone works on messages sent in the last 24 hours, and Signal calls it a best effort. A reply that quoted the message keeps the quote. The message may still be on another device in the chat or in a backup made before it was deleted.
GroupMe
GroupMe’s data export keeps an entry for a deleted message, with the time it was deleted, but a stand-in in place of its words. GroupMe’s own notices (joins, edits, deletions) are in the file too.

Why is the deleted message missing from my export?
An export or a backup is a copy of what the phone or the account holds at that moment. The app doesn't go back and fetch what was removed before, so the earlier you export, the more you have. Export again later if the conversation continues; keep the first file as it is.
Where else can a deleted message still be?
- On the other person's phone, if only one side deleted it.
- On another device signed in to the same account: a tablet, a computer, an old phone.
- In a backup made before it was deleted (see iCloud sync versus backup).
- In a screenshot, a forwarded copy, or a reply that quoted it.
- For plain texts, your carrier account shows a log of when each text was sent and to which number, not the words (see getting text records from your carrier).

How do you show a court that messages were deleted?
Keep the export exactly as the app made it, so the “This message was deleted” lines and their times stay in place. Write down what a deleted message said if you read it first, and when it disappeared. Tell your lawyer; whether the other side can be asked for their copy is a question for discovery (see how discovery of the other parent's messages works).
Does Verity show where messages were deleted?
For WhatsApp exports, yes. Verity's numbered message list prints each “This message was deleted” line where it was sent, marked “—” instead of a number, so every other message keeps its number and the gap is visible. Everything is read in your browser; the conversation is not uploaded. Verity can't bring back the words of a deleted message, and neither can anything else that reads an export.
Common questions
Does exporting a chat include deleted messages?
Usually not. An export copies the conversation as it is on that phone the day you make it, so a message deleted before then is missing. WhatsApp, Messenger and GroupMe leave a mark where a message was deleted, without its words; Instagram and Telegram leave nothing.
Does a WhatsApp export show deleted messages?
It shows that they were deleted. A message deleted for everyone appears as a “This message was deleted” line with its time; the original words are not in the file.
Can I get deleted messages back before I export?
On an iPhone, deleted messages wait in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days and can be restored first. Otherwise look for another copy: the other person’s phone, another device signed in to the same account, or a backup made before the deletion.
Can the other person tell if I recover deleted messages?
Restoring messages from Recently Deleted or from a backup puts them back on your own devices. It doesn’t send them again.
Does Verity show deleted messages?
In a WhatsApp export, yes: the numbered message list prints each “This message was deleted” line where it was sent, marked “—” instead of a number, so the numbers of the other messages don’t change. Verity can’t recover the words of a deleted message; nothing that reads an export can.
