Is There an App That Analyzes a Facebook Messenger Chat for Abuse?

Short answer

Yes, once the chat is out of Messenger as a file. Messenger has no export button: Facebook's Download Your Information gives you your messages as a zip, and end-to-end encrypted chats come from a separate download in Messenger's privacy settings. Paste-in checkers read only what you copy in. Verity reads either download in your browser, without uploading it, lets you pick the person, and flags patterns such as threats, gaslighting and demands for replies across the whole chat.

With Messenger, the analysis is the easy part. The hard part is getting the whole conversation out with who sent each message and when, because Messenger keeps two kinds of chats in two different downloads.

Step 1: get the chat out of Messenger

Ordinary chats: Download Your Information

In Facebook's settings, search for “Download your information” (it sits in Accounts Center). Choose Messages, a date range and JSON or HTML; Verity reads both. Meta builds the file in the background, tells you when it is ready, and the download link lasts only a few days (step by step).

End-to-end encrypted chats: a separate download

Messenger has been making personal chats end-to-end encrypted by default since December 2023, and those are not in Download Your Information. On a computer, in Messenger, click the three dots next to Chats, then Privacy & safety, End-to-end encrypted chats, Message storage, and Download message storage data (step by step). Many people need both downloads to get a whole conversation.

Only a phone

The encrypted-chats download is made on a computer. Without one, take overlapping screenshots with the dates showing (how). Verity reads Messenger screenshots too, and every time read from one is marked approximate.

Already have the download and just want to read it? See how to read a Messenger message_1.json file and how to find one conversation in the zip.

Step 2: pick the kind of app

1.Paste-in checkers on the web

Tether, DARVO.app, Gaslighting Check and Verity's free text check name the tactics in a few messages you paste in. See apps that check texts for manipulation for where each one sends what you paste. They see only what you copy in, and copying from Messenger drops the dates.

2.Red-flag apps on your phone

You screenshot a message or paste it in, and an AI names red flags and suggests a reply. Good for a second opinion on one exchange; they keep no dated record of the conversation. We tried several: red-flag scanner apps tested.

3.Tools that read the whole conversation

Verity reads the Facebook download or the encrypted-chats download in your browser, so the conversation is not uploaded, and flags patterns such as threats, gaslighting, blame-shifting, contempt, message flooding and demands for replies across all of it, with every message dated.

What Verity does with a Messenger download

  • It opens the zip where it is. Only the chat files are read, so a download full of photos and videos is fine.
  • You pick the person. A download holds every conversation; Verity lists them with names, and analyzes the one you choose.
  • It puts a long chat back together. A long conversation comes in several files (message_1.json, message_2.json and on), sometimes in more than one folder, such as archived chats or message requests. Dropped together with the encrypted-chats download, the same person's chats are joined into one conversation and messages that appear in both are counted once.
  • It knows which messages are yours. The person in the most conversations is taken as the account owner.
  • It leaves out what has no words. Unsent messages, a photo on its own and Messenger's placeholders are not analyzed. Chats with deleted accounts all show as “Facebook user”, so those are never joined together.

What to check before you use one

  • Where the messages go. Read the privacy page. A conversation holds the other person's words too.
  • How much it reads. One message rarely shows a pattern. Blame-shifting, demands for replies or threats matter because of how often they happen.
  • Whether dates and senders survive. They matter if you ever need the messages for a lawyer or a court.
  • Who else can get into your account. Anyone signed in to your Facebook account can download your messages too; see is my ex reading my messages?

What can't these apps do?

They read words and timing. They can flag a joke as an insult and miss cruelty that is politely worded, and none can say what anyone meant or whether a court will accept the result. Voice messages, photos and calls are not analyzed, and a message unsent for everyone is gone from both downloads (what Messenger keeps). Our methodology page sets out what Verity measured and where it falls short.

Where does Verity fit?

Drop in the zip, or both zips, on a phone or a computer, with nothing to install. The free preview shows the patterns found and one flagged message in full, and lets you read every message on screen, numbered in date order. Paid options are one-time: every message numbered in date order ($19), or a report quoting the flagged messages with their dates ($99 Standard, $149 Detailed).

Common questions

Can I export one Messenger conversation by itself?

Not from inside Messenger: a chat has no export button. The copy comes from Facebook’s settings and can hold all your conversations. Verity lists the conversations in the download, so you pick the one you need.

Are end-to-end encrypted chats in the Facebook download?

No. They come from Messenger’s own Message storage download, made on a computer. Verity reads both downloads and joins the same person’s chats into one conversation.

Do these apps upload my messages?

Many do: most AI red-flag apps and paste-in checkers send the text to a server, often on to an AI company. Read each app’s privacy page. Verity reads the download in your browser and does not upload it, which you can test by turning off the internet after the page loads.
