Is There an App That Analyzes Android Text Messages for Abuse?

Short answer

Yes, once the texts are saved as a file. Google Messages and Samsung Messages have no export button, so most people use the free SMS Backup & Restore app, which saves the phone's texts and picture messages to one XML file. Paste-in checkers and red-flag apps read only what you copy in or screenshot. Verity reads the backup in your browser, without uploading it, lets you pick one person's conversation, and flags patterns such as threats, gaslighting and demands for replies.

On Android, the analysis is the easy part. The hard part is getting the texts off the phone in one piece, with who sent each message and when.

Step 1: get the texts off the phone

Most phones: SMS Backup & Restore

Install the free SMS Backup & Restore app (by SyncTech) from Google Play, tap Back up, choose Messages, and let it finish. You get one XML file holding the phone's texts and picture messages, saved on the phone or to Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive (step by step, how to open the file).

Chat messages (RCS)

When both phones have chat features on, messages travel as RCS chats rather than texts. SyncTech says its app backs these up on Samsung phones or when you use Google's Messages app. Check that the backup holds your newest messages before you rely on it.

Only screenshots

Take overlapping screenshots with the dates showing (how). Verity reads Android Messages screenshots, light or dark, and every time read from one is marked approximate.

Step 2: pick the kind of app

1.Paste-in checkers on the web

Tether, DARVO.app, Gaslighting Check and Verity's free text check name the tactics in a few messages you paste in. See apps that check texts for manipulation for where each one sends what you paste. They see only what you copy in.

2.Red-flag apps on Google Play

You screenshot a message or paste it in, and an AI names red flags and suggests a reply. Good for a second opinion on one exchange; they keep no dated record of the conversation. We tried several: red-flag scanner apps tested.

3.Tools that read the whole conversation

Verity reads the SMS Backup & Restore file in your browser, so the texts are not uploaded, and flags patterns such as threats, gaslighting, blame-shifting, contempt, message flooding and demands for replies across the whole conversation, with every message dated.

What Verity does with a backup

  • It reads the file in pieces. A backup is often hundreds of megabytes because every picture message is stored inside it. The photos are skipped as the file is read, so a large backup opens in seconds on a computer.
  • You pick the person. A backup holds every conversation on the phone. Verity lists the people you texted and analyzes one conversation, so messages you sent to others are never counted against them.
  • It knows which messages are yours. The backup records whether each text was sent or received, so nothing is guessed.
  • It keeps the words of picture messages. Group texts, drafts and messages that are only a picture are left out of the analysis and counted. In the numbered list, a picture-only message is shown where it was sent, without a number.

What to check before you use one

  • Where the messages go. Read the privacy page. A conversation holds the other person's words too.
  • How much it reads. One message rarely shows a pattern. Blame-shifting, demands for replies or threats matter because of how often they happen.
  • Whether dates and senders survive. They matter if you ever need the messages for a lawyer or a court.
  • Where the backup is kept. A backup saved to Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive stays there until you delete it, and anyone who can get into that account can open it.

What can't these apps do?

They read words and timing. They can flag a joke as an insult and miss cruelty that is politely worded, and none can say what anyone meant or whether a court will accept the result. Photos, voice messages and calls are not analyzed, and a text deleted before the backup was made is not in it (can deleted texts be recovered?). Our methodology page sets out what Verity measured and where it falls short.

Where does Verity fit?

Drop in the .xml file, on the phone itself or a computer, with nothing to install. The free preview shows the patterns found and one flagged message in full, and lets you read every message on screen, numbered in date order. Paid options are one-time: every message numbered in date order ($19), or a report quoting the flagged messages with their dates ($99 Standard, $149 Detailed).

Common questions

Can I export one Android conversation by itself?

Not from Google Messages or Samsung Messages: neither has an export button. SMS Backup & Restore saves the phone’s conversations to one file, and Verity lists the people in it so you analyze one conversation.

Does the backup include RCS chat messages?

SyncTech, the app’s maker, says it backs up RCS chats on Samsung phones or when you use Google’s Messages app. Look for your most recent messages in the backup before relying on it.

Do these apps upload my messages?

Many do: most AI red-flag apps and paste-in checkers send the text to a server, often on to an AI company. Read each app’s privacy page. Verity reads the backup in your browser and does not upload it, which you can test by turning off the internet after the page loads.

SMS Backup & Restore's features are as SyncTech's own FAQ described them on October 29, 2026, and can change.
