Is There an App to Analyze a Telegram Chat for Abuse or Threats?

Short answer

Telegram exports a chat only from Telegram Desktop, its free computer app, not from the phone. Open the chat, choose Export chat history, pick Machine-readable JSON, and Telegram saves a folder with a file called result.json. Verity reads that file in your browser without uploading it, flags patterns such as threats, gaslighting and blame-shifting, shows who starts and who replies, and can number every message in date order.

Screenshots of a Telegram chat lose the dates and are easy to dispute. The export keeps every message with its sender and time, which is what any tool needs to start from.

Step 1: export the chat from Telegram Desktop

  • Install Telegram Desktop (Windows, Mac or Linux) and log in with your phone number.
  • Open the conversation and click ⋮ (top right), then Export chat history.
  • Untick photos and videos, and choose "Machine-readable JSON" as the format.
  • Set the date range to cover the whole period you need, then Export. Telegram makes a ChatExport folder with result.json inside.

Secret chats are not in the export: Telegram keeps each one only on the device it was started on, so screenshots are the record for those. More detail is in exporting Telegram messages; to open the file and read it yourself, see how to read result.json. Deleted messages are not in the export; see how long Telegram keeps messages.

Step 2: read it for patterns

Drop result.json into Verity. It reads the senders and times Telegram wrote, asks you to confirm which person is you, and in a group chat lets you pick whose messages to read. Then it:

  • Flags patterns, such as threats, gaslighting, blame-shifting, contempt, demands for replies and floods of messages, each shown with the messages around it.
  • Shows who starts and who replies, and how long replies take.
  • Numbers every message in date order, to read on screen for free or print as one PDF.

What to check before you upload a Telegram export

  • Where it goes. Prefer a tool that reads the file on your own device; you can test that by turning the internet off after the page loads (how).
  • Whether dates and senders survive, so every flagged message can be found again in the original.
  • Your safety. Telegram Desktop stays logged in on that computer. If someone else uses it, log out from Settings when the export is done, and delete the ChatExport folder when you no longer need it.

What a pattern check can't do

It reads words and timing. It can flag a joke as an insult, miss cruelty that is politely worded, and it can't say what anyone meant or whether a court will rely on it. Photos, voice messages and calls are not read. Our methodology page sets out what Verity measured and where it falls short.

Where does Verity fit?

The free preview shows the patterns found and one flagged message in full, and lets you read every message on screen, numbered in date order. Paid options are one-time: every message numbered in date order ($19), or a report quoting the flagged messages with their dates, grouped by pattern ($99 Standard, $149 Detailed). For other apps, see WhatsApp, Signal and Messenger.
