How to Review a 50,000-Message Text Thread for a Custody Case

Short answer

Don't start at message one. Get the thread's shape first: how many messages a month, who starts the conversations, how fast each side replies. Mark the dates that matter to the case. Let a search or a pattern check point you to the messages worth reading, read each one with the messages around it, and cite everything by its number in a list of the whole conversation, so anyone can check the context you didn't quote.

Years of texts between parents can run to tens of thousands of messages. Nobody reads that front to back, and nobody should have to.

A review in six passes

  1. Check the record is whole. Dates from start to finish, no unexplained gaps; see why an export can be missing messages.
  2. Get the shape. Volume by month, who starts conversations, reply times. Spikes usually line up with events.
  3. Mark the dates that matter. Separation, incidents, filings, missed exchanges, school and medical decisions.
  4. Search. Names, places, money, the children's school, words the client says were used.
  5. Let a pattern check point the way. Treat flagged messages as places to look, not conclusions.
  6. Read in context and cite by number. Read the messages around each one; quote with the message number so the full exchange is one step away (see the rule of completeness).

Read both sides

The other side will read the client's messages as closely as you read theirs. Find the client's worst messages before anyone else does, and the explanation for each.

What Verity does with a thread this size

  • Reads the export in the browser, without uploading the conversation. The pattern check takes time on a long thread, roughly 25 milliseconds per message of the person being checked on a desktop computer, so 100,000 of their messages is around 40 minutes; above 25,000, the consumer site offers to check the last 3, 6 or 12 months, 2 years, or everything.
  • Numbers every message in date order; a 100,000-message list runs to about 4,000 pages, and flags gaps of seven days or more.
  • The report prints each flagged message with its list number and the messages just before and after it, and a page on who starts conversations and how fast each side replies, month by month.
  • The free on-screen reader has a search box across the whole numbered conversation.
  • The numbered list can carry Bates-style page stamps, and in Verity Pro the exhibit can blank out words or names you list.

This is general information for legal professionals, not legal advice. A pattern check finds wording and timing; it misses things and flags ordinary messages, and it is not a substitute for reading.
