How Long Does X (Twitter) Keep Direct Messages, and Can You Get Them for Court?
Reviewed by Jacob Reed, founder of Verity ·

Short answer
X names no fixed period for DMs: its privacy policy says it keeps how you interact with others for the life of your account or until the content is removed, and longer for legal reasons. Deleting a DM removes it from your account only; the other person still sees it. A DM can also be edited at any time, up to 5 times, and the earlier wording can't be seen. Save the conversation now: screenshots, plus your X archive, which includes your DMs.
Harassment and co-parenting arguments happen in X messages too. Here is what X says about keeping, deleting and editing DMs, and how to keep your own copy.
How long does X keep DMs?
X's privacy policy lists the contents of Direct Messages among the information it collects. It gives no separate period for them: it keeps usage information, such as how you interact with others, for the duration of your account or until the content is removed, and may keep information longer to comply with the law, for legal claims and for safety. Its law enforcement page adds that some information, such as IP logs, may be stored only briefly.
Deleting and editing
X says that when you delete a message or a conversation, it is deleted from your account only, and others in the conversation can still see it. Editing works the other way: a DM can be edited at any time, up to 5 times. The original time stays, "Edited" appears under it, and X says earlier versions can't be viewed. If a message matters, screenshot it when it arrives.
Deleting your own side once a case is likely can be treated as destroying evidence; see deleting texts during a custody case.
How do you save X DMs for court?
1.Screenshot the conversation now
Scroll through the DM in order and take screenshots that show the other account’s name and the dates. Don’t crop them. A message can be edited later, and only the newest wording stays visible.
2.Request your X archive
In X: your profile icon, Settings and privacy, Account, Your X data. Verify with the code X sends, then choose Request data next to X.
3.Download it when X emails you
X says the archive may take a few days. Download the .zip while signed in to X in the same browser, and keep it somewhere other than your phone. It includes your Direct Messages.
4.Keep the account and the conversation
Don’t delete the conversation, the app or the account while a case is likely. Write down the other account’s @username and the dates of anything you think was edited or removed.
More on the archive, and the same for TikTok, is in saving TikTok and X direct messages for court.
Can a lawyer get DMs from X?
X's law enforcement guidelines say requests for the contents of communications require a valid search warrant or equivalent from an agency with jurisdiction, and other private information a subpoena or court order. On a law enforcement request, X preserves a snapshot of the account's records for 90 days while legal process is served. In a custody or divorce case, the messages come from the people in the chat; see how discovery of the other parent's messages works.

Common questions
How long does X keep direct messages?
X’s privacy policy gives no separate period for Direct Messages. It says it keeps usage information, such as how you interact with others on the platform, for the duration of your account or until the content is removed, and that it can keep information longer for legal requirements, legal claims and safety.
If I delete an X DM, does the other person still have it?
Yes. X says a deleted message or conversation is deleted from your account only, and others in the conversation can still see it.
Can someone edit an X DM after sending it?
Yes. X’s help page says a DM can be edited at any time, up to 5 times. The original time stays, “Edited” appears under the message, and earlier versions can’t be viewed, so screenshot messages that matter when you get them.
Can a lawyer get DMs from X?
X’s law enforcement guidelines say the contents of communications require a valid search warrant or equivalent, and other private information a subpoena or court order. Can Verity read X messages?
From screenshots, yes: Verity reads them in your browser without uploading them, lets you correct every message, and numbers them in date order. It doesn’t read X’s archive file yet.
Other apps work differently: see how long TikTok keeps messages, how long Instagram keeps messages and how long Discord keeps messages.
