Short answer

An Android phone keeps texts until someone deletes them; Google and Samsung describe no time limit on ordinary conversations. A deleted conversation sits in Trash for 30 days and can be restored, then it's gone. Your Google backup includes texts, and your carrier keeps only a log, not the words. To keep a conversation for court, save it as a file with SMS Backup & Restore and keep the phone.

Here is where an Android text lives, how long each copy lasts, and what to do before anything is deleted.

How long does Android keep text messages?

On the phone

Google’s and Samsung’s help pages describe no time limit on ordinary conversations: texts stay on the phone until someone deletes them, so the phone you text from is the main copy.

In Trash, for 30 days

Google Messages moves a deleted conversation to its Trash folder, where it can be restored for 30 days; each conversation shows how many days it has left. Once it is deleted from Trash, Google says it can’t be restored. On Samsung phones, things deleted in apps such as Messages go to the trash and are deleted automatically after 30 days.

In a backup

Android’s backup to your Google Account includes SMS and MMS messages, and RCS messages when you use Google Messages. Google says end-to-end encrypted messages are included in Android backup too. Samsung also offers Samsung Cloud and Smart Switch for restoring messages.

At the phone company

Your carrier account shows a log of texts on your line (date, time, other number), not what they said, and nothing sent over data, such as RCS chats.

For the carrier side, see getting text records from your phone carrier.

Can a sent text be deleted or edited?

In Google Messages, touching and holding a message shows Edit (for 15 minutes after you send it), Delete for everyone and Delete for me. So a message you saw may change or disappear later. Save the conversation early, and write down what a message said if it changes. What exports show for deleted messages is in does exporting a chat include deleted messages.

How do you keep Android texts for court?

1.Check Trash first

In Google Messages tap your profile picture or More, then Trash. Restore any conversation you need before its 30 days run out; you have to restore a conversation to read it. On a Samsung phone, check the Messages trash the same way.

2.Save the conversation as a file

Use SMS Backup & Restore to save your texts as a file, then keep a copy off the phone (a computer, or the Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive upload the app offers). The file keeps every message with its date, time and direction.

3.Keep your Google backup on

Leave Android backup on, so a lost or broken phone isn’t the end of the record. A backup restores to a phone; it isn’t a file you can hand to a lawyer, so make the export as well.

4.Don’t delete anything once a case is likely

Deleting your own side can be treated as destroying evidence. Archive a conversation if you don’t want to see it; don’t delete it.

5.Download the carrier log if timing matters

The log from your carrier account backs up when texts were sent and to which number, which helps if the other side says a message was never sent.

Step-by-step export instructions are in exporting Android texts for court; to read the file once you have it, see how to open an SMS Backup & Restore file, and to print it, see printing Android texts for court. Deleting your own side once a case is likely is covered in deleting texts during a custody case.

Can Verity read Android texts?

Yes. Drop the SMS Backup & Restore file into Verity and pick the person; a backup holds every conversation on the phone, so Verity reads only the one you choose. It runs in your browser, so the messages are not uploaded, numbers every message in date order, and flags patterns such as threats and harassment. Screenshots work too.
